Swan Hills is the nearest settlement to the geographical centre of Alberta. A mere 30 km outside of the town site, along Highway 33 is a short trail that leads to a cairn marking the center of Alberta.
The land around the town site itself is heavily wooded and full of muskeg, making it poor for agriculture, but great for both summer and winter outdoor recreation, forestry and wildlife. The town of Swan Hills is currently situated on top of the largest oilfield in Canada, from which four major oil companies supply nearly one-third of all Alberta's oil needs.
The town is accessible through many forms of transportation. Drivers can follow Highway 33 along the scenic and historic Grizzly Trail. The trail, which was officially designated as a historic one by the provincial government of Alberta, retraces the route taken by early settlers. This route is also used by Swan Hills' regularly scheduled bus that commutes from the town to Edmonton. For flyers, the town of Swan Hills is equipped with its own airport.
