Hunting

In addition to the other great outdoor recreation opportunities the Town of Swan Hills has to offer, you can also include year-round hunting and fishing. Whether ice-fishing or bow hunting is your favorite way to spend a weekend, Swan Hills has a wide diversity of big game. Here's some information on the hunting and fishing seasons.

 

WHITE-TAILED DEER
The hunting season for white-tailed deer (both antlered and antlerless) runs from September 4 to October 31 for archery hunting and from November 1 to November 30 for general hunting. Antlered deer can be bow hunted from August 25 to September 15 while general hunting takes place from September 1 to November 30. Antlerless deer can also be hunted from August 25 to September 15 by archery only and from November 1 to November 30 by general hunting.

MULE DEER
Mule deer (antlered only) can be bow hunted from August 25 to September 15 with open season running from September 16 to November 30.

BLACK BEAR
Black bear can be hunted from August 25 to September 15 by archery only and from September 16 to November 30 by general hunting. In spring, the bear season runs from April 1 to May 31.

MOOSE
Moose (antlered only) can be hunted from August 25 to September 22 by archery only and from November 1 to November 30 through general hunting.

ELK
Bow hunting season on elk runs from August 25 to September 21, and open season from September 16 to November 30.

COUGAR
Cougar hunting season runs from December 1 to February 28.

PHEASANTS
Hunting season for male pheasants runs from October 1 to October 31.

GROUSE
Sharp-tailed grouse season runs from September 1 to November 30.

GRAY PARTRIDGE
September 1 to November 30.

WATER BIRDS
Ducks, coots and common snipe can be hunted from September 1 to December 16.

GEESE
White-fronted, Canada, Snow and Ross' geese can all be hunted from September 1 to December 16.


In addition to the many hunting opportunities, Swan Hills is also the perfect place for some fishing. Flowing waters are open to fishing from June 16 to August 31 except for the Freeman River downstream of Highway 32, which is open from April 1 to October 31.
