FireSmart Program

Congratulations Swan Hills! We have been identified as a FireSmart priority community and are one of only six communities in Alberta that received a 2007 FireSmart Community Grant. The Swan Hills FireSmart Committee is working closely with the Town of Swan Hills, the Swan Hills Fire Department and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) to help reduce the threat of wildfire in the community.

Learn about how the Town is taking steps to reduce the threat of wildfire in the community and how you can apply FireSmart principles to help protect your family and home.

Where we’ve been
We’ve already reviewed and developed plans, conducted some vegetation management, hosted public education events and introduced additional water sources to the community with our last FireSmart Community Grant. Now we’re ready to take Swan Hill’s FireSmart Program to the next step and build on the solid foundation we’ve put in place.

Where we’re going
The Swan Hills FireSmart Plan identifies the following key priorities:

Vegetation Management
Fuel modification projects will be completed within the Town boundaries which will mainly consist of ladder fuel removal.

Planning and Development
The Town of Swan Hills Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw will be revised where necessary to meet FireSmart guidelines. This includes infrastructure standards and combustible roofing material controls for all new structures.

Public Education
Regular updates will be implemented via events, media, newsletters and other tools will be used to keep the residents of Swan Hills informed of FireSmart activities and progress. Ongoing two-way communications between community and the Swan Hills FireSmart Committee is key.

Inter-Agency Cooperation and Cross-Training
A formal wildland/urban interface cross-training strategy will be developed and implemented for the Swan Hills Fire Department in cooperation with SRD.

Emergency Response Planning
The Swan Hills Presuppression Plan will be completed to provide one comprehensive pre-attack plan for the Town and SRD emergency responders to use when protecting the Town of Swan Hills in a wildfire event. A mock-wildfire field exercise will be developed and implemented to practice and test the Swan Hills Presuppression Plan strategies.
